Chiron's DZ range of twin-spindle vertical machining centres represent the ultimate in fast and flexible machining through the provision of comprehensive tooling and worktable configurations. With up to twin 36-tool magazines available through the four-machine series, DZ models can be supplied with a fixed-table pendulum machining capability that extends the X axis travel to 8,000 mm or beyond, to suit customer specification. Alternatively, the machines can be fitted with twin rotary tables or one fixed and one rotary table, to provide a shuttle machining envelope of four by 400 mm in X. In these cases, work can be loaded/unloaded on one side while machining is carried out on the other. With Y and Z axes travels of 300 mm by 425 mm (on the model DZ12), the machines also boast Chiron's characteristic fast operation features. Spindle speeds are up to 15,000 revs/min, rapid traverses reach 40 m/min, while the super-fast tool change time of 1 sec is complemented by a chip-to-chip time of 2.9 secs (3.9 on the DZ28, the largest in the range). These are exceptional performance figures for a machine in this class. Both toolchanger and tool magazine are located outside the working area, being totally suspended yet enclosed above the spindle. This prevents contamination by swarf and coolant. |
Dry machining routines are accommodated by the novel bed design that has smooth, rising sides to ensure unobstructed chip flow. The mid-range DZ 18L typifies how DZ machines can be configured to suit a wide variety of machining permutations. Powered by two 18 kW motors, spindle speed on the DZ 18L extends from 20 to 10,500 revs/min and torque is quoted as 140 Nm. Rapids across the X, Y and Z axes are 40 m/min. Toolchangers are available to carry twin sets of 12, 24 or 36 tools. Machining capacities for both spindles are: drilling - 42 mm; tapping - M30; milling 200 cm3/min (in ST 60). Through-the-tool coolant, supplied at 70 bar, and integrated tool measurement and management are supplied as standard. |
